White Road Lines

In Uganda, both outside and inside road lines are white.

Road Marking

Urban Residential Clues

Kampala can appear busy, with many signs, narrow unpaved roads, and many small one-storey houses. Houses are often surrounded by tall walls, commonly topped with barbed wire.

Architecture

Kampala City Centre

In central Kampala, paved roads with black-and-white curbs are a notable feature. The city centre appears richer and more built-up than the rest of the city, with many multi-storey buildings.

Architecture

Kibale Forest Road

Kibale has a small forest road that is still wide enough for car coverage. The forest is quite dense, usually not very dark, and the area is mostly flat.

Vegetation

Wide Forest Road

A national park location includes a very wide dirt road running through dense tropical forest. It is described as the widest dirt road in Uganda outside Kampala with Street View coverage.

Vegetation

Savannah and Bushland

Near the northern end of Lake Albert, roads may have low dirt barriers along the sides. The western part has savannah, while the eastern parts have many small trees and bushes, with only a fairly low, wide mountain range far to the west.

Vegetation

Kidepo Road Vegetation

On the north road in Kidepo, the southern half is somewhat forested. This can occasionally make the various mountains harder to see.

Vegetation

Park Street View Car

In Ugandan national parks, much of the coverage uses a Street View car similar to the one seen in Kampala, but with a black bar along the front. The car’s visibility varies greatly and is sometimes not visible at all.

Vegetation

Humid Forest Coverage

National park coverage consists of two small forest paths running parallel to each other. The forest appears very humid, and water drops can be seen on the camera lens in much of the coverage.

Vegetation

Dry Western Vegetation

An area west of Lake Victoria is described as having by far the driest vegetation cover in Uganda. The grass is almost always completely dried out, and the bushes and trees along the road also typically look very dry; the terrain is quite hilly but not mountainous.

Vegetation

Dark Forest Paths

Some coverage follows tiny forest paths. The imagery is somewhat dark, with sunlight shining through at times.

Vegetation

Branching Cacti

Some national park areas have brown dirt and large cacti with many branches rising almost straight upward, giving them a tree-like shape.

Vegetation

Open Hilly Vegetation

An eastern stretch of path may be recognized by small palm-like trees in an open hilly field. A man in green holding a rifle may be following the photographer there.

Vegetation

Dark Red Forest Paths

Near the Kenyan border, a national park has two covered stretches of path. The first is in forest on a fairly steep slope rising to the east, and the dirt is typically a very dark red.

Vegetation

Northeastern Savannah Park

A national park in northeastern Uganda mostly consists of a large savannah. Mountains are visible in most directions, with the most recognizable mountain range to the east and visible in most coverage.

Terrain

Kidepo Savannah Road

In Kidepo, the northern half of the north road is in savannah terrain. It can be recognized by a wide mountain to the north.

Paved Road Coverage

Outside Kampala, the only paved road with coverage can be found here. Its pavement mostly lacks the red tinge typical of many roads in the country, and it has solid white outer lines with a yellow center line.

Other

Roadside Orientation

A power line runs parallel to the road on the east side. Hills are visible to the north.

Other

Northern Crater Lakes

In northern coverage, large water-filled craters are commonly visible. Similar craters are not found elsewhere in the country.

Other

Non-Red Dirt Area

In Queen Elizabeth National Park, north of Lake Edward, the dirt is typically brown or greyish rather than red. The clue identifies this park as one of the only places in Uganda where non-red dirt is commonly seen.

Other

Northern Murchison Palms

Seeing these palms in Uganda strongly points to the northern parts of Murchison Falls.

Other

Kampala Taxi Buses

In Kampala, taxi buses with a blue blocky pattern on the sides can be a useful city clue. This can help when the Google car is not visible.

Other

Hilly Kampala

Other

Red-Tinted Ground

Soil around Kampala is typically very red. Even paved roads often show a noticeable red, purple, or pink tinge.
