Yellow Biscript Signs

Direction signs in North Macedonia are typically yellow and use both Latin and Cyrillic script. Town names appear in both scripts.

E-75 Road Markings

On parts of the E-75 north of Veles, the road has triple yellow lines with a dashed centre line. In the northern part of the road, a yellow truck follows the Google car.

White Road Lines

Road lines use white on both the outside and inside. This marking is a simple white-white pattern.

Skopje Dominates the Skyline

Skopje is the capital and by far the largest city. Large apartments or buildings are a strong sign that the location is Skopje.

Guardrail Trees

On the E-65 between Tetovo and Skopje, trees can appear between the guardrails. This is a vegetation clue for North Macedonia.

Planted Median Trees

A small part of the E75 and the A1 have planted trees in the median. This is a vegetation clue tied to those road sections.

Mountainous E-65 Trees

Trees can also be seen on E-65 between Tetovo and Skopje. The E-65 is much more mountainous than the A1.

Dry Grassland Landscape

North Macedonia’s general landscape consists of relatively dry grasslands, with small hills and scattered trees.

A3 East of Veles

A section of the A3 east of Veles has triple yellow lines, a very uncommon road marking in Europe. The surrounding road has a very arid landscape and is noticeably under construction.

Road Condition and Terrain

The road is either under construction or newly paved. It resembles the A3 east of Veles, but that route is flatter and surrounded by arid landscape.

Greek Lamps

These utility-pole fixtures, known as Greek Lamps, can be found in North Macedonia. They also appear in Greece and Serbia.

Drives on the right. Use this as a quick cue for road-side orientation.

E-75 Median Hill

On a section of the E-75 between Skopje and Kumanovo, a large sloped hill sits between the lanes. Use this as a route marker for the area.

E-65 Median Divider

On the E-65 just south of Tetovo, each lane is separated by a concrete median instead of a normal guardrail. This is the only highway in North Macedonia with this feature.

Divided Roads Overview

Some roads in North Macedonia are divided. A map can show where these roads are found.

Southern R1205 Fly

A fly can be seen on the southern portion of the R1205. This appears nowhere else in the country.

Brown Smudge Marker

A brown smudge points to the far southeast of the country. Use it as a location cue for that part of North Macedonia.

R1304 Smudge Marker

Three smudges indicate the R1304. Kočani is the only large city on this road, though coverage there is extremely limited.

Camera Smudge Clue

Camera smudges can appear anywhere in North Macedonia. A single black smudge most likely points to the A3 between Bitola and Prilep or the R1302 in the far east.

Green Truck on E-65

A green truck is visible behind the Google Car for part of the E-65. It can be seen from Kichevo to Arbinovo.

Seasonal Coverage Cities

Winter to late fall coverage is found in Skopje, Tetovo, Prilep, Bitola, and Ohrid.

Sparse Coverage

Coverage is sparse, with only some highways and some cities included in the country. Use it as a limited reference rather than a complete map.

Major City Coverage

Significant city coverage is limited to Skopje, Bitola, Kumanovo, Prilep, Tetovo, Veles, Ohrid, and Strumica. These are the only cities noted with substantial coverage inside the city.

Yellow Warning Signs

North Macedonia normally uses yellow-filled warning signs. Most of Europe uses white ones.

Yellow-Filled Signs

In southeastern Europe, Greece also commonly uses yellow-filled signs. Slovenia sometimes has yellow-filled signs.

Obituaries in Tetovo are vertical and black. Two main types are found in the city: one with the cross above the border and one with a thick cross in between the border.

Prilep Obituaries

Obituaries in Prilep are vertical and black. The border does not go completely around the poster, making it easy to distinguish.

Veles Obituary Markers

In Veles, obituaries are vertical and blue. Veles has the largest variety of obituaries, and when they are blue, they are the only city with the cross above the border.

Obituaries in Strumica are vertical and blue. They are the only obituaries with an intricate pattern in the corner of the poster.

Ohrid Obituary Layout

In Ohrid, obituaries are horizontal and appear in red or blue. When the obituary is red, the cross is placed underneath the border.

Bitola Obituary Plaques

Obituaries in Bitola are horizontal and can be light or dark blue. The cross sits between the border and leaves a gap in the rectangle.

Kumanovo Obituaries

Obituaries in Kumanovo are marked by a thick light blue border. This border makes them distinct from other obituaries.

E-75 Border Highway

Along the E-75 near the Greek border, most of the road has only one guardrail separating each lane. Some sections have a guardrail on one side and a concrete median on the other, and both features are found only on this highway.
